Turning Screens into Streets: A Virtual City Experience
Hello everyone! This
week, I collaborated with my wonderful group members, Reyyan, Furkan, and Elif,
to design teaching materials that integrate AR and VR. Our goal was to help
students explore a city using AR/VR tools while practicing their English in an
engaging and meaningful way.
The task consists of four
steps. In the first step, students explore two famous landmarks in New York
City through 360-degree videos. Next, they visit a museum using Google Arts and
Culture. In the third step, they learn about a cultural aspect of New York.
After each step, students answer questions based on their exploration. These
questions are designed to focus students' attention and encourage them to
provide simple explanations and personal responses.
In the final step,
students complete a postcard-writing project, imagining they have spent a day
in New York. This final task allows students to use
what they have learned in a creative way. Additionally, we created an ASSURE lesson plan and used it as a guide while
designing this activity. I found the assignment relatively easy to complete
since it followed a clear series of steps. However, deciding on the questions
and choosing the city was a bit challenging for us. Overall,
the task was successful.
In
my opinion, AR/VR integration increases motivation and makes language learning
more enjoyable when it is used with clear instructions and meaningful tasks. Also, I think this type of
integration can be especially effective for visual learners
